Larry Sample started Auto Specialties Performance in 1988 after he had just purchased a 1988 LX Mustang and wondered if changing the accessory pulleys would free up any HP for the car. His experience in chains and sprockets on dirt bikes to change ratios was the basis for the idea on the pulleys. After making one part for prototype and testing on the track the idea had proven itself. Before long, he had made ten more pieces and put flyers on windows of fellow Mustang owners and eventually sold them. 10 more were made and sold a little faster as word of mouth at the track got out. Today, ASP is the leading automotive underdrive pulley manufacturer!
