RAM Clutches’ modest beginnings date back to 1972. From the back room of an OEM clutch rebuilding operation in Canton, OH, John Norcia and his then partner, Ray Bickar, began designing and building better race clutches for a group of local competitors, who were fed up and demoralized with their clutch performance. At the heart of this program lay the radically new RAM three-paddle ‘Cleaning Lady’ clutch disc. Until this time most racing clutches were constructed of organic materials, which provided neither the durability nor the consistency needed for competition. Though Ram forged ahead with a new poly-encapsulated spring design—pioneered and patented in 1978—the three-paddle disc evolved into the current six-paddle design, and continues to be reintroduced by various clutch specialists long after its original introduction in 1976!
In the late 70’s a new series of RAM circle track clutches emerged. A 6-¼ inch design incorporated the same paddle-disc technology in a smaller package than was available up to that time, giving racers a smaller and more durable package. The RAM coupler, a direct drive clutching device, was another circle track innovation introduced around 1984.
By the early 80’s power output had increased, notably in Pro Stock and in early Top Sportsman competition, to a point where it became apparent that controlled clutch slippage was emerging as the science of the future. As a consequence RAM, in 1983, introduced its first carbon-carbon clutch. Bolstered by data-acquisition technology, RAM developed a line of billet multi-disc clutches that, to this day, have become the standard for high horsepower Pro Stock- and Pro Modified-style race cars.
Today with the resurgence of factory muscle cars, RAM is heavily involved in providing clutch solutions such as the Street Dual and hydraulics systems that allow for major modifications to the vehicle, yet still provide good street driveability, which is the premise today for all RAM Street-Strip clutch systems.
